Hello all! I was wondering what type of system III you guys are using for
filling pores. I looked in the archives and found some references to
"finishing resin" but could not find anything like that in the System III
catalog. I think the "clear coat" is what I'm looking for but wanted to check
with you guys before I bought it. Thanks.

Tommy buddy SIII "Clear Coat" and "SB-112" are what you want.

Clear Coat is for woods with minor pores and will not fill as well as the SB-112 or Z-Poxy finishing resin for that matter.  SB-112 is more like Z-Poxy only clearer in my experience.

SIII also recommends using a silica thickener which is not necessary with Z-Poxy finishing resin.

Check out LMI's site, they sell all three products and have some good things to read there.

BTW I really liked SIII and used it a bunch of times.

If you can spring for both types I liked to use the thin stuff first because it popped the figure of the wood better then anything else I have used.  Then I would do a second coat for the heavy pore filling with the thickened SB-112.

The down side of SIII as far as I can tell is it's pricey AND requires a high degree of precision in the mix ratio - a gram scale is required.  Also - SIII's site eludes in a cryptic way that they think that if kept in the dark it should last a year with no problem.  Other epoxies will last far longer then a year if kept in the dark.  So I am using Z-Poxy these days because it is cheaper, easier to find, it is said to keep longer, and the slight amber tint that it has is pleasing to me.

Good luck Tommy.
