I decided to try Rockhard. I didn't pore fill with Zpoxy because I wanted the amber cast of the rockhard without the influence of the epoxy. The pores are getting filled, but I'm wondering if it is worth it. I'm wiping thin coats of diluted Rockhard on for base coats, 2 a night, sanding the next day, and adding 2 more coats until I have a nice filled and level surface. After that, I'll spray a couple of thin coats on and hope to level and buff out.

These shots were taken several hours after the second coat was applied. I like the rockhard on the adi and myrtle, but the amber tone doesn't do much for the bubinga. I don't think it hurst anything.

Adi on Myrtle (baritone)

Adi, spalted maple rosette, zirocote bindings

zirocote headplate and fretboard.

Mahogany/oak/walnut

Adi/bubinga/maple

Bubinga

Beautiful guitars Steve!

On the myrtle guitar, the binding is dark, but it looks curly.... what kind of binding is this?  I love the bound sound hole too.

Awesome job!!

Steve, you've got the before and after in your mind's eye...of course...but from my monitor that Bubinga looks gorgeous.
Oh, and that Myrtle ain't too shabby either.
Yes, more pix please!

They are looking great.  Keep coating.  Looks like it's doing the job.

Das myrtle ist fantastisch!!!

The shine off that wood is incredible! Does it look like that in really life, or does that have something to do with the camera flash?

Looking good, Steve. I believe that John How used Rockhard on his small ladder-braced Stella repros and they look terrific. I'm not sure what his pore filling was but perhaps he can chime in.

Without pore filling, how many coats will it take in order to get a smooth surface? What final thickness will you have?

Gotta love that Myrtle!
The Ziricote bindings are a great choice also!
Are you going to leave the fret board in the white?

Looking good, Steve.

You say you didn't want the color of the rockhard to be influenced by
epoxy. Did you consider pore filling with the epoxy and sanding back to
bare wood, leaving it just in the pores? Or is that what you wanted to
avoid too?
