Ouch. wow7-eyes Good thing it wasn't your sons hand. One of those things that makes you realize how dangerous power tools are. I almost sliced my stomach open with a 3 in. router bit last summer making radius dishes. Tried cleaning up the edge freehand. One of those "Wow that was stupid" deals.

Just like the ESH person came a drilled for soil samples at work. Went right through the PVC water main. Have you ever seen grass boil? So much for the Safety part of that.

Heal fast.

Shane, I hope you have a speedy and full recovery from this awful misfortune. I think we all should have a graphic picture of this on our machines…so easy to forget and get complacent. The danger is always present.

Ahhhh man... what a drag!
Thats unfortunate to say the very least!!!!
I really really hope that they can save the finger brother, and that you will be able to "play" guitars as well as build them,(do you play?)
Shane - all this going on.... and you were able to get my parcel together so fast???
wow.. I would have understood if you needed extra time,,,,, what a shippping stud!

You know as well as anyone (better actually) that its just not worth it to be mentally distracted around or while working on machinery... however

>its something that seemingly ALL of US are guilty of at some point... every now and again..<

Usually we are so wrapped up in the stress aspect of the scenario, that we arent thinking rationally enough to say
"I had better get focused..if Im to work on this machine" at the time....
like we do the other 9999 times out of 10000 that we do make the proper decision.....
I did the same thing on my bandsaw a while ago, but only was nicked on the knuckle thankfully..
I believe that (hopefully) "stopsaw" technology will be standard equipment on all potentially dangerous machines one day,,, and hopefully when you son is grown and cutting his own wood these stories will be a thing of the past... just like most of us
lol
Cheers
Charlie
My best wishes for you Shane, please have a speedy recovery friend,, and praying that you keep all your digits!!!!

Shane--

I'm truly sorry to hear this news. Best wishes and heal quickly. I too, had the heebie-geebies reading this. A accident can certainly happen in the blink of an eye. Thank you for giving us this very frank account of the circumstance. May we all heed the advice!

Dude that sucks!!!

I hope you have a speedy recovery.

And you are so right about the power tools. I am scared absolutely s**tless from some of them. The more I use them the more I fear them..

I have had a mishap or two on an edge belt sander and I know the kind of pain THAT causes... let alone an industrial band saw.

Good words for all to heed.

Shane, You are in my families' prayers,
(I wish they made a SawStop for the bandsaw,... I for one would buy one of those too. The shop is a Dangerous place... duh )

Best wishes for a full recovery,
Sanford S.

Shane, here's one more wish for all to go well, and get well.
Those were sobering pictures!
At least we won't have a sound clip, right?

Steve

Ouch!! Man, I hope everything heals up good and you don't lose your finger. I'm also very glad it was not much worse, and appreciate the warning. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

As sobering as this has been for us all, Steve, thanks for the levity! Really.

Shane,
As I said before => Get well soon. I downloaded your xrays to print out, laminate and hang by the table and band saw, drill press, router table etc., etc.

Is there to be additional surgery? If so, when and is there anything else we can do besides pray?

Thanks Steve,

I will get the pins pulled in 6 weeks. We went and had the dressings changed today and there was good colour in my little finger which means that it is getting blood....that is a good thing! The surgeon says that 72 hours is the critical time so we will see how it goes. My fingers are bandaged up but I don't feel any real pain so am just on antibiotics. One of our own members who knows of this stuff has commented on the pics I posted and stated that it looks like the repair was done well and might even meet the archival standard!!!

Otherwise we are all doing well. I have good health coverage and will be looked after while I recover.

Thanks again for all of the prayers, thoughts and kind words!

Shane (and the family!)

Shane about five years ago I was working working at a lumber yard and my boss had an amazingly similar injury. It took a bit of time but within about 6-8 months he had full use.
I hope for a speedy and full recovery for you also.

Kirby
