I'm one of the weirdos who slot, and radius fret boards by hand; with pencil marks. (I do have a 19th century 12" digital caliper to mark them)The 2 I'm working on now have tied on frets, so that's a whole other thing. I do have another baroque that wouldn't need fret slots, but a fancy inlay. I don't know if Andy does that. Maybe it would would be a break from the hum drum.
I think he lives 45 minutes or so from me.

Sometimes it would be nice to have something made. The 19th century workshop can be hard on the elbows; at least they bother me more than my hands. The hands get stiff. The elbows get sore. Yes, I do use electricity, and even a powered lathe, drill press, and band saw at times. And the digital caliper, and digital scale.

I did order a hand rosette cutter from LMI the other day. It was supposed to come today, but they now say tomorrow. I'm really not a fan of using a Dremel tool. Noise, harshness, vibration, dust! Beside the finicky adjustments.I got another marker, and the copper glue pot from them before.

They do have things no one else has.

Barry--

I have bought direct from Cardinal. Also, Allied Lutherie carries Cardinal.

Depending on the product you are buying, yes. It just depends. Brad Combs and I have compared notes a few times on this, and we have gotten some inconsistent responses when dealing with the different regional offices of Cardinal that each of us has to go through. I think it would be worth a call to the Dallas, TX office of Cardinal to see if you can get what you want directly. And if you have trouble getting what you want, see if they can connect you to the in-house musical instrument finishing specialist at Cardinal. I think his name is Mac. Brad can straighten me out if I am wrong on that name. And there is Allied Lutherie, of course. They sell smaller quantities of some Cardinal products.

Yeah, Mac Schurmeier is who has helped me in the past with developing a schedule for spraying the Cardinal UV cured materials.

Like Don mentioned, in some cases the website will say sold in gallon or even 5 gallon containers only and when we called they had quarts available.

I'm guessing that at some point after LMI closes that their web site will go away which means some of the web resources will go away too. Things like manuals and the long list of blog articles on various topics. I've downloaded a couple manuals for LMI tools I have to be sure I have them in the future. Their tutorial videos are on youtube so I imagine they will stay there if they shut down their web site.

I bought a Guitar Player magazine in 1981 and saw a small ad for The Luthier's Mercantile in Healdsburg, CA.
They had a catalog for $2.00, so I mailed two dollars cash and got their awesome catalog.
They were the best at what they did. Extremely helpful. They replied to every letter I sent them.
They answered every question and then some.
Thank you Luthier's Mercantile!

Same here--late 70's or early 80"s I got one of their deluxe catalogs, got another when it became Luthiers Mercantile International (and lots of catalogs in between and since). What great sources of information and inspiration! Seems their catalogs sold information moreso than they did goods--and at a way pre-Internet time when information like that wasn't readily available in print form.

I appreciate everything they've done for the community and really hate to see them go. But i retired a few years back and certainly understand. The crew at LMI have more than earned their status as retirees! Thanks folks!

Dave

Goodbye LMI Instrument Maker's Glue.....

Went there to buy my last bottle and it's no longer listed on the website. I'm sure going to miss it.

I stopped in yesterday. There were several tables set up with a variety of items. I bought some miscellaneous tools, some nice guitar top sets, and other items at a great price. They still have a large inventory of tone woods and parts available on line. Sad to see the end approaching but I’m happy for the crew being able to retire.
