I really cringe when I hear the stories about instruments made using the old milk based Cascamite glues... Where they found out that the stuff turns to powder after about 20 years....

I remember an episode of Gilligan's Island sort of like that, only it was glue derived from tree sap, and it let go after a few days. Planks started popping off the repairs they had made to the SS Minnow right as the boat was put back in the water.

I loved that show. :D

I don't recall that particular episode but it probably had the professor devising the ingenious formula, which Gilligan then screwed up during production. Everything probably worked out for the best, though, as the aborted sailing saved them all from some sort of disaster further out at sea, making the Skipper's little buddy the unlikely hero once again. In the end he was surely smothered in smooches from Ginger and Mary Ann and offered a vast reward from the Howells -- should they ever actually be rescued.

Actually, IIRC, It was Gilligan who discovered the glue when trying to make syrup for his pancakes. The glue worked very well but unfortunately they discovered it was not waterproof. But I could have that wrong, it's been a while. . .

IIRC, Bryan is right about the pancakes, but I don't think water was the problem. I think the glue worked great for a few days, then just let go, in a dramatic fashion ("boing" noises and all).

Gosh, how many of us owe indelible childhood memories to Sherwood Schwartz, who brought us not only Gilligan's Island, but also The Brady Bunch?

That was an old black and white episode IIRC.

BTW Maryanne was way better than Ginger

Back when "the professor and Maryanne" were just "and the rest."

Boy, if the Off Topic Police see this one, there'll be trouble for sure.

Mary Ann, most definitely.

Reminds me of Green Acres when Mrs Douglas saved the day when Mr. Douglas blew a head gasket in an old truck.
She had whipped up some pancake batter that day only to find it was inedible but just tough enough for gasket material.
