I don't understand. A wheel cutter/marking gauge will always be tilted while riding on the domes of the top and back. Also, the height of the binding is never the issue.

Are you talking about riding the tool on the sides? That makes sense to me but is limited in the waist area. In this case, a gramil would do the trick. I don't own one but could easily make one.

A picture would be worth a thousand words.

With the relief of the inside edge of the binding and purfling, the outer face of the binding shows a constant distance from the edge of the top or back. There is a slight error which results, but if you do the math, it is on the order of 0.006" (tan 6 deg = error/0.060") at the back heel, but with the minimum error on the remaining back binding channel at least 0.003", the maximum variation in binding depth is at or under 0.003... you see more variation in some lots of binding and purfling than that, so on a nice, traditional 0.180" binding height, error is 1.67% or less. When compare to error of 0.015-0.030 inches depending on shoe and cutter diameter, that is a significant improvement. You'll want to relieve the inside corner of the binding in any case to get a better fit, and scraping that 45 degree chamfer to about 2/3's of channel width ensures a nice, tight fit and good compliance of the channel edge with the purfling.

I will look to see if I have some of the illustrations we did for the build manual. I suspect that I have posted them before, so a search in the archives will likely turn up additional material. I am home sick with COVID (again!!!), and have some serious brain fog, so try the archives.
