you will do better to brush it I use a paper towel folded up to apply. I find that the air can cause the shellac to dry before it hits the surface.

John, I am interested to hear more about the problems you encountered with CA. Was it a specific type of finish that didn't like it? Would a shellac sealer help?

the issue using CA was with nitro. All seemed fine at first , a few years later the adhesion was lost and the finish came off in sheets.

Yikes! I hope not to see that! When I used CA I did it for a couple reasons one of which is BECAUSE it's a glue and I was filling Wenge, also known as African crack wood. The idea being that the thin CA will soak into the wood and strengthen it. Wenge has cavernous pores too. That guitar is at least 5 years old now and belongs to a local guy so I've seen it a few times since and so far so good. I pore filled with CA and using sand paper to make a dust slurry to fill the pores then I French Polished the guitar so it's all shellac.

CA might work UNDER my homemade oil varnish; I never tried it; but it makes a mess of the dried varnish if it gets on the surface!

No one else has to worry about that incompatibility.

I've used CA under OSMO on fret/finger boards with no problem. Pores don't usually bother me at all; coming from the violin world; but a really smooth board seems like it will stay a lot cleaner. CA on a fretboard is not like CA on a body.
