In addition to the khaya 00 I’m also soldiering through on the ziricote 00. I have to wear the PAPR full time. Anyone want to buy some nice ziricote sets? :D

Dueling heating pads out tonight!

I received a commission for a copy of a 1925 Santos Hernandez in spruce and Cuban mahogany some weeks back. (this is the guitar in question https://www.guitarsalon.com/product/1925-santos-hernandez-sp-mh)

While looking for suitable material from various suppliers I came across this old table on Facebook marketplace. From the mediocre pictures it certainly looked 19th century and likely Cuban mahogany; for 100 beans it seemed like a safe gamble. Well, my hunch was right and I've begun processing the material. Thus far I've been able to cut 8 back and side sets (2 piece, and 3 piece) and still have one more leaf to go. This stuff is incredibly resonant, I can't wait to work with it at the end of 2024 when this commission hits the front of my queue

Lucky duck.
I used to source some of my woods from old piano cases back in the 80's. Got some marvelous bird's eye maple years ago which I processed into peghead veneers and strips... It's all gone now.

If I’m becoming annoying, just tell me to stop. :)

Working on the rosette for the ziricote 00. The skinny ring will be the sound hole binding.

I I worked at the shop, I couldn't change the parts I made. But I tried to have fun changing speeds/DOC/feedrates, and insert type to get nicer chips, and quicker times. Just for fun.
Yes.
I am a weird one.

That's not weird at all. It's fun to work with a milling machine.

I’m finally getting a chance to build a guitar with laminated sides and linings. Clients usually want you to build them a guitar like a guitar you’ve built 50 times before… gaah

Pretty cool Michael. I see you have the popsicle brace and UTB already installed. Curious - how do you clamp them? When you glue on the top or do you glue the top before the back?

Thanks Steve,

I glue the top on in a radius dish using cam clamps around the perimeter. I catch the popsicle stick brace with a couple go-bars. I’ve been doing it like this for quite a while - never been one to follow the rules very well.

Cheers M

I like that it allows you to do a more precise fit of the braces around the neck block. Now that I can judge my glue application better I would be more willing to put the back on last which would let me try some of my ideas around the neck block.

I like your clamping method. I feel the top is the most important part to align exact so I install it first. At this stage of my guitar building, I'm not overly concerned with a little glue squeeze out showing on the back. I need to build some more clamps though and I need a dish or at least a halo to clamp in.

Finishing up my latest build. A Nashville Telecaster, which has a strat pickup in the middle position. This has an extra wide neck (1.9" at the nut) for a friend with large hands. Body is swamp ash and a maple neck and fretboard. This is the second guitar that I have wound the pickups for.

Nice Barry!
I don't know anything about electric guitars, but I really like the fretboard, the way the nut and the frets look on it, and the way it flows into the headstock. Very nice.

Maybe they are all like that? I wouldn't know!

Working on the ziricote 00 today and also about to tear into this vacuum kit from veneer supplies. A little nervous to be honest….

Brad, when I first went to vacuum, i ordered a used pump off of Ebay and some parts from Joe’s Woodworking to make a switch controlled reservoir. Then, I noticed that my pump was rated “continuous duty.” I never built the reservoir. I plug my pump in when I use it and unplug it when I’m done, sometimes several hours later. It’s been simple and never a problem. I did eventually buy a newer pump because the old one was so noisy.

I also got a pump off ebay and use it running continuously without a reservoir. It works fine.

Yep, that’s what I use today as well, a Gast pump. This kit has booth so can go between continuous run and not.

I don’t like leaving the Gast pump running unattended for long periods of time. It’s older and it does get hot run running.

Excited to finish the 1966 Deluxe Reverb clone I have been building. I purchased this kit as a winter project... oh well I may be done in two weeks the way it's going. :)

This is the most complicated amp I have ever built and number 5 for me. Not shown is the bias board and filter cap board that hangs under the chassis and the reverb tank that will go in the box too.

Installed my badge yesterday and this morning I will be checking the length of some leads and if everything is OK the mother board and it's matching backing board will be bolted to the chassis.

Then it's point-to-point hooking up of the pots, jacks, pilot light, fuse and switches. That will take a while.

Been playing the 60's Princeton that I finished a couple of months ago and love it. My hope is the Deluxe will just be more of the same only with a little more bass and headroom.

I did not make the bridge. I decided to keep the body end of the strings at the standard width so I could use a commercially available bridge and pickup parts. It seems like it is working out fine and everything is lining up nicely.

Thanks. I was hoping there was a wide bridge solution for electrics although I probably won’t ever need to build another. I posted my 335-like guitar earlier in this thread. It was hard to get appropriate hardware, but I got my 1 13/16” nut and 2 5/16” spread at the bridge. It’s likely the only electric I’ll ever need. Your tele is beautiful.
