I watched a recording of an early Romantic guitar this morning. It looked like an early Martin. The video give you enough info that you could probably make it. Quite nice.

But it isn't a C. F. Martin, Vienna. According to the player: This guitar was made in Paris in 1830 by Guillaume Louis Martin.

Apparently, just like in the violin world, people copy from everyone else; especially if they are "hot", or commanding more money for their instruments.

Are the frets over the upper bout actually installed on the body? What is this kind of thing called?

Some guys have good blogs showing builds of baroque and romantic guitars. Here is a Lacote about the same age as the Martin:

It has a cool, hidden Vee headstock join. Some are fancier.

Baroques are fancier, smaller; but long scale instruments with double courses, and tied on gut frets.

This guy has a bunch of plans. I have the Voboam baroque, and the Lacote plans.

This Lacote plan has a double top, that I just noticed in the specs. Sounds weird, a top under the top but not glued to the top. First time that I've ever heard of that. But they say it sounds great. It has more bling.

Yes those extra frets are set into the belly, and are just ebony. They didn't go there that often. These instruments are clearly still holding on to the baroque features: mustache bridge, tang on the belly up the neck; some have the friction pegs, but the Lacote has slot heads on higher priced models. Stauffer, and maybe C.F.Martin had the fancy 6 in line tuners with the brass cover. The Martin/Stauffer also has an adjustable neck with a floating archtop style neck.

I don't know guitar sizes, but the AU plan said it is A0 sized. They are cute little things. 635 scale or so. The baroques are more like 670-680 scale, and only go from A to e, and not E to e.
