The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I get that he is equating it to the rareness of the wood but unicorns aren't rare, they don't exist at all. They were hunted to extinction in the 1760s. I thought everyone knew that.

Yes they were, but the South Koreans are going to bring them back to keep the Mammoths company. bliss

All of the strips don't match, so unless you want to build the D35 version of a lute boat you are combining incomplete sets of lute ribs. Some ouds have alternating woods (light and dark) so you could do that adding another type of wood strips, but the price is pretty outlandish, even for BRW.
