Don't know if it matters, but my Kohno 30 classical has side splints that start at one edge and go about 2/3 of the way across and taper down to nothing, then a complimentary splint comes from the opposing edge offset about 1/2" and goes 2/3 of a way the other way, so that they sort of overlap, but not too close to each other.
