I received an order of b/w/b purflings that are 0.250" tall instead of standard height. I can't exchange it, so I have to ask, what do people use it for? I have come up with 2 choices.....

1) make a jig and slice it along its length to a more manageable size
2) lay it beside the top binding, which will eliminate the shelf but result in a much wider binding channel.

Any ideas would be appreciated,

Maybe it would be for celli and basses? Seriously, I can’t imagine. Using it alongside the binding sounds like the easiest option.

Last time I had some wide wood purfling I made a jig and sliced it. Jig was wood with a covered groove the width of the purfling and a razor blade stuck at about a 45 degree angle. Wasn't a precise cut as the cut wandered a bit with the wood grain but it worked ok. A more precisely sized groove would have helped there.

As long as your linings are wide enough you can cut the purfling rebate to the same depth as the binding rebate and install the purfling and binding at the same time.

My thoughts: Help is but a mailman away. Buy the right stuff, store the wrong stuff, and carry on. Do't try to make do/modify/work around the wrong stuff. I think there's plenty to do during the few days it takes for the mailman to bring salvation. For the small dollar cost of the right stuff, I think time is more valuable than money.

Full depth purflings eliminate the step that is occasionally visible with tortoise binding.

As long as you have linings that are wide enough to support full depth purflings I don't see a downside to them. You won't sand through them if you are heavy handed on the perimeter sanding (you'll sand through the top first! )
