I copied what I read somewhere and made up a hand saw like shown above, the finest-kerf saber saw blade I had in my heap of saber saw blades. And the handle is the handle of a foam brush that had done its painting duty. So my dollar cost was as close to zero as it gets. And the saw works wonderfully. Doesn't bend in mid-stroke, doesn't wander off intended path, cuts a nice slot, and if I remember to buy some matching saw blades, I could make up another saw for the thickest strings. This is one of those things that overthinking fogs up. Make up a saw and try it out. If it's not right, try to make the next one without the problem(s) of the first. Easy to do, and like someone said, we're not building moon rockets, but guitars. We can afford quite a bit of trial and error without injuring the project.
