Hi Barry, I'm not following how you are getting the 40 thousands difference from side to side. From one end of the drum to the other (assuming it is relatively straight) you should only have about 20 thousands error, and if you flip the inboard and outboard edges as you thickness it you should hold it to about .010" or less - the thickness of a light gauge e string. Personally I prefer to leave the center of my soundboards a little thicker than the edges, but if you don't then quick work with a ROS would take care of it. Making and keeping finicky tolerances on an open end sander is not something I would do.
