Kent Everett ( http://www.everettguitars.com ) will be offering a steel string top voicing master class in Denver, Colorado May 3rd and 4th. The idea is for everyone to brace and voice a guitar top to within some pre-established parameters and then bring that top to the class. Kent will discuss what each brace does and talk about voicing the guitar, top and back radius etc. On Sunday he will then personally voice each person's top. After the class you should have a working knowledge of how to voice a guitar as well as an example that you can hang on the wall of your shop for future reference.
> Spaces are limited and a first come first served basis. The cost of the class will be $200.
> If you are interested please let me know ASAP and I will put your name on the list.

Has anyone ever taken one of his classes? Does he have any soundclips of his guitars? I may be interested.

Over the years I have taken every class he has offered so I am a bit biased. Go to his website and read his BIO. He has been doing this for over 30 years (800 plus guitars) and is one of the most highly respected builders around.

Back when I started building I took some classes from Kent. I also only live across town from him. Kent's workmanship is truly art! He is a good instructor. He conveys the ideas clearly and he is patient. His experience and accomplishments are beyond question.
You will learn a lot.

I took Kent's building class a few years back and can attest to his being a great teacher and builder. $200.00 for this class sounds like a bargain. I really wish I could go but I've got to work. I hope everyone who goes has a good time and learns a bunch.

Thanks for letting everyone know about this Robbie.

$200 sounds like a fantastic deal. Look up Bebo Norman's 10,000 days, or Caleb Carruth on iTunes to hear Everett's with very pure recordings. Mic into Neve preamp, no EQ, light compression.

Thanks everyone for the interest in the upcoming Kent Everett Top Voicing Master Class. The class is now full. However, I am making a waiting list in the event that someone drops out.

Are there any other OLFers going to this? I'm flying out there for a nice little vacation/learning weekend.

I'll be there Darren. I've made every one of Kent's classes here in Denver. You will not be disappointed!

Very cool, Tracy! Have you ever been there when the subject was 'voicing the top'?

Darren,
No, this will be the first voicing class I attended. The last 2 were how to do a proper fret job, and a Master Critique class where we learned about setting up a guitar. I'm sure you will like it. SO much information in 8 hours!

I am a bit confused about the class, I thought we would be voicing the tops, but he is basicly going to go around and voice each top individually? Can you explain what will happen?

Also, can I bring a dish-ed top with dish?

Kent will send out some specs for you to thickness and brace your top to. He then wants all people who are going to attend to voice that top to what they think is necessary to have a top ready to go for a guitar. Kent will then critique your top and add his touch to the voicing. This top can then be used for future reference when in your own shop voicing tops for other guitars.

Ok, Rodger that, that sounds great! So we should be under-voicing? I may make a backup top.

If you want to "undervoice" I suppose you could. The reason for voicing the top before bringing it to the class is that first it would be impossible in the time allotted to completely voice all the tops from rough bracing to finished product. Second, most people tend to over brace their tops anyway.

Hi All,

I've been away from the forum for a while...but I'm BACK.

Anyway, I have taken serveral of Kent's classes (setup and fret/re-fret), hosted by Robbie O'Brien at Red Rock Community College. The classes were great, the host is organized, and the facility is top notch.

I'm planning to attend this class also. I'm usually the only female in the classes, which makes for a lot of fun, for me anyway. ;)

Cheers,

Karen K.

I'm pretty in-touch with my feminine side though, so it helps balance things out.... Right doctor? ;)

Yes Michael, you seem to be pretty secure with masculinity....which tends to bring out that feminine side. U Rock!

So I should brace a top (from LMI dred plans), and tap tune it to my ear, all the way? I think I would want a back up top for this.
